Magistrate Judge Staci G Cornelius was appointed in 2014. She has more than twenty years of courtroom experience in both civil and criminal matters, having tried more than two hundred jury cases in multiple state and federal courts. Immediately prior to taking the bench, Judge Cornelius served as an Assistant United States Attorney, prosecuting federal offenses such as health care fraud, financial fraud, and civil rights violations in the Northern District of Alabama. Judge Cornelius graduated from the University of Alabama School of Law in 1992. She began her career as a Deputy District Attorney for Jefferson County, Alabama and tried more than 150 felony jury cases to verdict over the course of six years. She was an attorney with Gaines Wolter & Kinney from 2001 through 2007, and with Haskell Slaughter Young & Rediker from 2008 through 2012, during which time she tried 68 civil jury cases to verdict. Her civil practice involved a variety of matters, including automobile liability, medical malpractice, products liability, retaliatory discharge, premises liability, dram shop and liquor liability, and bad faith and extra-contractual claims. Judge Cornelius was recognized by The Alabama Jury Verdict Reporter as one of the most prolific trial attorneys in Alabama for the years 2005, 2006, and 2007. During her time in private practice, Judge Cornelius also served as an adjunct professor at Samford University’s Cumberland School of Law teaching Basic Skills in Trial Advocacy.
